Weapons in World War 2
The second World War 2 ( which is often referred to as WW2) lasted from 1939 to 1945, when Germany started it in an unprovoked attack on Poland and although it had been stated that there were smaller battles before this time on the 1st September 1939, that over one million Nazi troops invaded Poland and as promised two days later on the 3rd of September, France and the United Kingdom declared war, as Hitler refused to stop his invasion on Poland.
Most of the world soon followed apart from Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. They decided to stay neutral by not taking any sides. Although Ireland was a neutral country, many Irish people still helped the Allies. The Second World War lasted nearly six years and involved over 30 countries and 100 million people. During this time it was estimated that fifty to eighty-five million deaths occurred because of the war making world war making WW2 the deadliest conflict in human history. WW2 was fought between two major groups of countries called the Axis Powers and the Allies , although these groups changed slightly throughout the war as invasions occurred at the start of the war they were:
Axis Powers; Germany, Italy and Japan
Allies; France, China, UK and some of it's commonwealth, e.g. Canada, Australia and New Zealand
In 1939, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was Neville Chamberlain. At 11:15am on 3 September, 1939 he announced via the radio that the United Kingdom was at war with Germany.
In the first few months of the Germany's main Priority was to control Poland and therefore not many weapons were used. However, in August 1940 that all changed as Hitler ordered the German air force to prepare for an invasion on Britain.
Throughout this website I am going to describe the different weapons used by land, sea and air which contributed to the millions of deaths in WW2 and eventually made the Axis Powers surrender.
